Like most of the coolest women I admire these days, I met Courtney online. I wonder what it’s like to grow up in a world where you can find people who resonate with your values just by surfing a hashtag. It’s revolutionized my adult life. But that’s a topic for another post, I suppose. Anyway, that’s how we met!
Recently Courtney went on this very cool solo vacation that sent me down a long Google search for “vintage trailer hotel”. Forever jealous of solo vacationers. I mean, look, I love to vacation with Ryan–so much so that I don’t actually want to vacation without him. But the idea of waking up with just your dog in a trailer outside of Taos? I mean… that’s what dreams are made of!! What I’m saying, is you should follow @readasaurus_rex on Instagram. You’ll see, real quick, why “explore” is her word.
How do you want to introduce yourself to these readers?
Well, I guess I could start with HI! Hi, readers, I’m Courtney aka @readasaurus_rex (a handle I came up with years ago and am still super proud of, so feel free to call me that whenever you want). I’m an Aries, which I think says a lot about me: passionate, talkative, easily distracted, with flashes of hot temper followed by lots of love and forgiveness. I have a heart for adventure, and I love experiencing new things unexpectedly. Above all and most noticeably, I love to read. I am so passionate about the written word. I work as a bookseller in the heart of Santa Fe, New Mexico in a thriving bookstore, and my favorite thing to do both on and off the job is connect people to books I think will change them.
What gets you out of the bed in the morning?
Oh man, so many things. There’s just SO MUCH to love about life. I don’t understand how people get bored because there are so many things I want to pack into my (hopefully) 70 or 80 or 90 years that I feel like I’ll run out of time before I get to do everything. But if I have to answer, I guess these things are the top of the list: finding out what happens next in whatever book I’m reading; going to work and connecting a reluctant young reader to a book they’re actually excited to get into; taking unknown roads off of main highways and ending up somewhere completely by surprise; traveling alone and meeting new people in speakeasies or hostels or concerts; taking my dog to the wilderness and watching the unbridled joy of discovery in every inch of her little body. Ultimately, I guess it’s the wonder and the miracles in the little things every day that make me excited to get up and start a new day.
What word/ phrase resonates the most in your life?
Hmm. This is a tough one. But I’d say the word “explore” holds the most meaning and resonates with me. I feel like there are so many depths to the word explore. In a literal sense, I love exploring the world around me: the state I live in, or new countries and cities, or the wilderness. But I also explore my spirit when I sit in silence and think only about the sound of the wind across a mesa and the smallness of my place in the great vastness of time. I explore the experiences of others when I read books. Every day, regardless of whether I go a mile from home or a hundred, exploration is the word at the core of me. I devour the world in myriad different ways, all the while hoping to leave it better than I found it when I go.
What does your ideal day look like?
Woof! Another tough question. I think ideally I’d want to start and end a day camping. Wake up in the back of a truck bed or a tent at dawn, make coffee and breakfast over a campfire, spend the day exploring a forest or mountain or swimming beneath a waterfall, and then end the day drinking whiskey from a tin mug and falling asleep beneath the stars, with only the sounds of the forest for company. If my love is there with me (who that is remains to be seen), it would not be unwelcome, but I don’t mind doing things on my own.
That’s it! Hope your readers enjoy learning a little about me. I’m so intimidated by this because talking about myself this much feels a little weird. Thanks for asking me, though. I’m honored!
I’m sure that last little paragraph wasn’t supposed to be published but I kept it in there because I hear from a lot of you that you’d like to do Meet Me Monday but you’re nervous to talk about yourself or you’re not important or something like that. But, like, everyone feels that way. Do it anyway! If this sounds fun, reach out! Or if you know of anyone who would be cool for this, let me know! Tag them on Instagram or on Facebook and tell them how cool they are.
