I became familiar with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie through her TEDxEuston talk, We Should All Be Feminists—from which this book was adapted. My friend, Jessica, reminded me that I also knew of her from Beyonce’s video for Flawless.

Virtual Book Club: The Secret Life of Bees and July Selection Announcement!
Sorry (I ain’t sorr’) to say that this is not a spoiler free review. I guess I figure if a book has been around long enough for the movie version to be past the New Release rack, it’s all fair game.
I’ve sat down to write this review for The Secret Life of Bees so many different times and I just can’t figure out what to say. And it’s not because there’s nothing to say. It’s because how do you put words on that feeling you get when you’re broken open and speechless?

Virtual Book Club: May 2016, READY PLAYER ONE By Ernest Cline
*This is a spoiler-free book review.
My whole life I have given serious crap to anyone who says that they read a book when they just listened to the audiobook. And if I’m being completely transparent with you, I’ve always considered audiobook lovers cheaters. I’m not saying that I’m proud. I’m just telling you the truth. So a little bit of me feels like a grand hypocrite by saying what I’m about to say: I didn’t read Ready Player One. I listened to it on our road trip from Kansas to Arkansas to Mississippi to Louisiana to Oklahoma back to Kansas. I would have loved to read it on that trip but I get supremely sick if I’m reading in the car so we’re all making sacrifices, here.

April Book Club Select Review + May’s Pick!
As you may recall, for the month of April, our Virtual Book Club chose to read Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger and here’s my review! Leave your review or a link to your review in the comments and we’ll see what you thought of it, too!

What drew me to pick up this book in the first place? Probably ignorance? I recognized the author as the author of The Time Traveler’s Wife and while I never actually read that book… or even saw the movie… I saw previews of the film and so, obviously, I knew all about what this book would be about. Right? Hopefully you’re seeing how very wrong this theory was. It’s like playing a game of telephone and then paying $15 (yeah, I paid full price for this book!) and committing several hours of your life based on the outcome.
I picked it up at a time when I was looking for something easy to quickly draw me in. Maybe a little romantic? I thought I’d found it! And then I suggested it for the book club and we were all in agreement and lo and behold! We were all reading it and we had to finish it. Hahaha! Does that give away how I felt about this book?
I really wanted my first book review to be “OMGILOVEDTHIS! EVERYONE READ IT! EMOJISEMOJISEMOJIS!” But this one is a little more complicated. Please keep reading.

Page 84: Gushing on Books and Special Announcements!
I talked to you about how in all of 2015, I finished reading exactly one book, right? In fact, I put on my 2016 Bucket List “finish reading one book”. And I’m happy to report that even though it’s only the end of March, I’ve already met that goal. Twice over, actually!
Please stick around till the end of this post for a very exciting announcement!
